Literacy Links Group Tutoring Program

Our small group tutoring sessions (maximum of 5 students) are run by Nikki or Taryn and delivered at our South Morang venue. These sessions are ideal for students that thrive in a group environment and would like to strengthen their literacy skills  with an underlying maths focus.

This program includes:

  • Literacy skills are essential in mathematics, as they help students comprehend and communicate mathematical concepts effectively. Our first term of tutoring has identified an opportunity for us to support our students further by providing them with the literacy skills they need to be successful at mathematics. This is why we are excited to announce the launch of our new program Literacy Links. Literacy Links is suited for students from Foundation - Year 6 and will focus on the literacy skills within mathematics. These skills will include:

Reading comprehension: Students need to be able to interpret and understand mathematical texts, including key words, mathematical language, the structure of word problems, instructions, and mathematical concepts presented in books or other resources.

Vocabulary: Mathematics has its own specialised vocabulary, including terms such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, geometry, algebra, and more. Understanding and correctly using this vocabulary is crucial for success in math.

Writing: Students often need to explain their reasoning, show their working and describe their thinking by writing explanations and reflections. Clear and concise writing skills are important for effectively communicating mathematical ideas

Interpreting: Being able to interpret graphs, charts, tables, and other visual representations of mathematical data is a critical skill. This involves understanding what the data is showing and being able to draw conclusions or make predictions based on it.

Critical thinking: Mathematics requires students to analyse problems, think logically, and apply problem-solving strategies. Literacy skills such as inference, evaluation, and synthesis are important for making sense of mathematical concepts and solving complex problems.

Communication: Students need to be able to confidently discuss their mathematical thinking with others, whether it's collaborating on group projects, explaining their reasoning to a teacher, or presenting findings to their peers. Strong oral communication skills are valuable in math education.

  • Weekly sessions are structured to maximise student engagement. Explicit teaching and modelling of core literacy strategies and skills are embedded throughout the session, along with sequenced and scaffolded tasks (both collaborative and independent tasks) that target students at their individual point of need.

  • Programs are individualised for each group based on their learning needs, goals, interests and learning styles.

  • We will use our expertise to select rich and authentic learning tasks that allow students to strengthen their literacy skills.

  • The interactive games we choose are selected with a specific purpose and are designed to strengthen a core literacy skill.

  • We will provide optional homework tasks to be completed in between tutoring sessions. These tasks will be independent tasks and explained within the tutoring session. Often this will be an interactive game and will reinforce a specific skill or concept.

  • We provide detailed feedback after each tutoring session. This feedback will be individualised and emailed to each parent.

  • We will provide a Limitless Maths workbook to each of our tutoring students and we encourage them to use this book for all the work we do as part of the tutoring program. This becomes an important reference for students as it will contain worked examples, completed tasks and a documentation of their learning journey.
